York

The cottage is within easy reach of York with its many attractions, including the Viking Yorvik Centre, National Railway Museum, Minster, the shambles and the famous city walls. Shopping is a delight with its many large stores and smaller shops in the narrow, cobbled back streets.

Evening entertainment is equally varied which could involve a moonlight cruise, theatre visit or ghost tour of one of Europe’s most haunted cities.

North Yorkshire Moors

The moors, within close proximity to the cottage, offer a National Park of outstanding beauty. The bleakness of the moors are softened by secluded dales and provide a break in the never ending sea of heather in late August and September. A fifth of the park is covered by woodland, which is becoming one of the main recreational areas of the park, with forest drives and picnic sites. There are an abundance of pretty secluded villages upon the moors, including Goathland, which is were the TV fictional series Heartbeat is filmed, and is well worth a visit. The park also boasts the North York Moors Railway, which is a steam locomotive railway winding its way through outstanding scenery, from Pickering to Goathland and Gromont, and is a must for visitors to these parts.

Yorkshire Coastline

The coast has an abundance of different scenery from Withernsea in the south to Whitby in the north. Bridlington is a small seaside town with harbour and promenade, ideal for a long stroll beside the sea, whilst Scarborough, one of England’s oldest seaside resorts is a much larger, more vibrant place. Whitby on the other hand is remembered for its maritime connections, and is dominated by the cliff top ruins of Whitby Abbey. Close to Whitby are a number of pretty fishing villages including Robin Hoods Bay and Runswick Bay. There are also many non-commercialised beaches, some rocky and worth exploring, including Flamborough head and Boggle Hole.

Historic Houses & Gardens

There are numerous historic houses and gardens within the area, the most famous and spectacular being Castle Howard (Brideshead Revisited)., which lies only 20 minutes away. Sledmere House, with a splendid collection of antique furniture and large parkland lies only four miles away. Burton Agnes Hall, an impressive Elizabethan mansion with lovely gardens is also close by.

Yorkshire Wolds

The cottage is situated upon the Yorkshire Wolds, which are the most northerly chalk hills of Great Britain.. The gently rolling hills areincised by dry valleys. On clear days there are spectacular views across to York and the moors.

The area is a particular delight for walking with numerous paths, including the Wolds Way and Centenary Way, which both pass within a mile of the cottage.
